Support Our Sutherland Shire Veterans – Your Donation Makes a Difference
Dear Sutherland Shire Community,
Today, I reach out to you not just as a resident, but as a veteran who has seen firsthand the challenges faced by our servicemen and women after their service concludes. Many of our veterans in the Sutherland Shire are struggling with the financial hardships that come when support from the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) is delayed, with claims taking up to two years for approval.
Our veterans have given so much in service to our country, and now it’s our turn to give back to them and their families. A donation from you can alleviate the financial stress that many of our veterans face daily. Whether large or small, your contribution will have a direct impact on improving the lives of our veterans and their families right here in our community.
How You Can Help:
- Donate: Every dollar counts and goes directly to supporting the veterans in our community who need immediate assistance.
- Spread the Word: Share this with friends and family. The more people know, the greater the impact we can make.
- Volunteer: If you can offer time or services, our veterans would benefit from your skills and companionship.
To all the veterans in the Shire, we see your sacrifice, and we thank you for your service. To the rest of our community, thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
Warm regards,
Edward, Veteran of the Sutherland Shire

THE BADGE
In the heart of the tranquil Shire region, there stood a tight-knit community ofveterans who had served their country with unwavering dedication and pride. These veterans had come from different branches of the military—Navy, RAAF, andArmy—but they had formed a strong bond, recognizing the importance of workingtogether as a team, just as they had during their service. To symbolize their unity and their connection to their homeland, they decided tocreate a badge for their Shire Veteran Association. This badge would not only honour their military backgrounds but also pay homage to their shared love for their local sports team, the Mighty Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The badge was designed with great care and thoughtfulness, each element carrying deep significance. The choice of colours was deliberate: blue represented the vast expanse of water, an homage to the Navy veterans among them. White symbolised the clouds, a nod to the RAAF veterans who had soared through the skies. Black, the colour of the earth, represented the Army veterans who had marched on solidground. Together, these colours represented the unity of their experiences andbackgrounds. At the centreof the badge, a majestic shark emerged from the depths of the blue, itspowerful form denoting the region they all called home—the Shire. It was a symbol of strength, resilience, and the pride they took in their local rugbyleague team, the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks.Above theshark, a beautifully rendered Southern Cross shone brightly, illuminating thebadge like a guiding star. This constellation held a special meaning for theShire Veteran Association. It represented not only the stars that had guidedthem through their military careers but also served as a reminder of theircommitment to their fellow veterans—past, present, and future. It was a symbolof hope, unity, and the enduring spirit of Australia's veterans. As the badge was unveiled, it quickly became a source of pride for the CRONULLA-SUTEHRLAND VETERAN ASSOCIATION. They wore it with honour on their uniforms, displayed it at their meetings, and shared it with fellow veterans and community members alike. It became a unifying symbol, reminding all who saw it of the bond forged through service, the love for their local team, and their dedication to the greater community. The badge served as a testament to the resilience and unity of the Shire veterans. They knew that no matter where life had taken them in their military careers, they were forever bound by their shared experiences and their love for the Shire and its beloved Sharks. Gymea Gorillas Junior Rugby League Football Club: The Benefits of Community, Health, and Well-being
The Junior Rugby League Football Club stands as a vital pillar of our community, fostering a sense of unity, promoting health, and enhancing the well-being of its members. This club is not just about playing rugby; it is about building a supportive environment where young athletes can thrive, both on and off the field.
Community Connection
The Gymea Gorillas create a strong sense of community among players, families, and supporters. The club provides a safe and nurturing space for young people to come together, form lasting friendships, and learn the values of teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship. These relationships extend beyond the game, fostering a tight-knit community that supports and encourages one another.
Physical Health
Participation in the Gymea Gorillas Junior Rugby League offers significant physical health benefits. Regular training and competitive play ensure that young athletes stay active, develop physical fitness, and build strength and endurance. This active lifestyle helps combat childhood obesity, improves cardiovascular health, and promotes overall physical well-being.
Mental Well-being
In addition to physical health, the Gymea Gorillas emphasize the importance of mental well-being. Being part of a team helps players develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging. The structured environment of the club provides a positive outlet for stress and anxiety, promoting mental health and emotional stability.
Life Skills
Through their involvement with the Gymea Gorillas, young players gain valuable life skills that extend beyond the rugby field. They learn the importance of discipline, time management, and goal setting. The challenges they face in training and competition teach them perseverance and the ability to overcome obstacles, skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.
Personal Impact and Career Development
My own journey with the Junior Rugby League Football Club has profoundly shaped my career in both the Australian Defence Force and the Australian Federal Police. Starting with my early experiences playing for Cronulla Caringbah and De La Salle, I later had the honour of representing both clubs in rugby league and rugby union within the Australian Defence Force. The discipline, teamwork, and resilience I developed on the rugby field were directly transferable to my professional life. The physical and mental toughness required in rugby prepared me for the demanding nature of military and law enforcement work. The camaraderie and leadership skills honed with junior football equipped me to effectively lead and collaborate with diverse teams in high-pressure situations.
Community Service
The Gymea Gorillas also play a significant role in giving back to the community. The club often engages in local initiatives and charitable activities, instilling a sense of civic responsibility and the importance of helping others. This culture of giving back enriches both the lives of the players and the broader community. They are very Passionate about the Veterans in their Community
Conclusion
The Gymea Gorillas Junior Rugby League Football Club is more than just a sports team; it is a cornerstone of community life, promoting health, well-being, and the development of essential life skills. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, the club helps young athletes grow into well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society.
We are proud to support the Gymea Gorillas and look forward to seeing the continued positive impact they have on our community.
Sincerely,
Edward Lopez
